9th Grade Weekly Vocabulary Homework Instructions

9th LA Weekly Vocabulary Format

Vocabulary is a daily activity. Each week you will receive five new vocabulary words. The words are cumulative—this means that words from previous weeks will be repeated on future quizzes in addition to the new words for that specific week.

Monday: Copy the new words, parts of speech and sentences from the overhead.

In the vocabulary section of your binder, note the vocab. number (from the overhead) and the date for the current week (“Week of _______” – the Monday date for that week should be used in the blank) Format your information as follows:

Vocab. #_________ Week of __________

1. word: (part of speech)

a. sentence

b. definition

c. synonyms

2. word – etc.

NOTE – Do not type or photocopy words and definitions – they must be in your own handwriting.

Tuesday: I will occasionally check to see that you have the words, sentences, definitions and synonyms in your notebook. This check will be a HW grade. We will review vocabulary in class as time allows.

Wednesday: Complete vocabulary cards for the new words. You will write the word on one side of a 3x5 card and include the definition at the top of the reverse side, along with the sentence. We may have time to start this in class, but it is always Wednesday night HW.

Thursday: We will review the vocabulary in class if time permits.

Friday: Vocabulary quizzes will be given on Friday. Quizzes will usually contain ten questions with five new words and five old words (from previous weeks). Vocabulary quizzes will require you to use the word in context so you must be able to understand the use of the word in a sentence and recognize synonyms. DO NOT merely memorize the definitions or you will not do well.
